ILMT Installation, Upgrades, & Ongoing Services

Optimize ILMT operations and reporting in your IT environment

Canyon Consulting provides expert services related to the installation and use of the IBM License Metric Tool (ILMT), IBM's free tool to extract software data usage. Canyon will optimize ILMT operations and reporting in your IT environment to ensure reports accurately reflect your deployment and usage.

What is included with the ILMT Installation, Upgrade Service?

This service includes:

Installation of ILMT server as well as assistance with installation of all “agents” running IBM software.

Identifying and trouble-shooting problems associated with ILMT installation and running ILMT in your environment (note: IBM is responsible for fixing bugs/providing patches).

Upgrading you to the current version if you are currently running an older version of ILMT.

Generating a baseline ILMT report.

Staff training.

What is included with ILMT Ongoing Services?

Undertaken after an ILMT installation or upgrade, the Service includes:

Running ILMT reports on a regular basis--monthly, quarterly, or semi-annually.

Correcting issues, applying fixes, and providing technical support for changes in IT environment.

Training staff to customize and annotate ILMT reports.

Why is this important to you?

The beneficial outcomes from this service include:

IBM requires a current version of ILMT to be installed and running for sub-capacity (virtualization) pricing.

Terms & Conditions (T&Cs) require a two-year history of ILMT data upon request. With anything less than two years of ILMT available, IBM has the right to apply full-capacity pricing with associated fees and/or penalties.

If you don’t have ILMT when you receive an audit letter, chances are you will be required to install it as part of a settlement.

It’s challenging to keep track of new ILMT releases and other IBM changes that impact ILMT, e.g., Cloud PACs/other new products; and products no longer supported by ILMT such as Microsoft 2008 and RHELv4.

Organizations don't typically have spare resources to run, manage, and trouble-shoot ILMT, as the work requires specific knowledge and significant experience to handle efficiently, so outsourcing is a more practical option.

Frequently asked questions about our services

Can the service be conducted remotely?

We respond to the preferences of our clients. Prior to and during the pandemic, we have worked well with clients remotely; however, we are available for on-site work, as required or desired by the client.

Can Canyon Consulting help with licensing across all of our deployments, and with all licensing models?

Yes. In today’s environment, it is important to keep track of licensing across all deployments (i.e. on-premise, hosted, private and public clouds), and for all license types (i.e. perpetual licensing, temporary licensing, hybrid, and SaaS licensing).

Can Canyon Consulting support my ILMT/BigFix install?

Yes. We can install ILMT and support the ILMT infrastructure across your IBM Enterprise for all supported platforms, i.e., Windows, AIX, Sun Solaris. We keep ILMT running efficiently by correcting Agent errors, applying fixes, managing upgrades etc.

What tools or processes do you use to achieve your results?

Canyon has proprietary tools and processes we use in our backend to automate some of our data analysis; however, these processes do not require any tools to be installed or executed on-site at customer locations. In addition to working with ILMT, we also use customer tools such as SCCM, CASE, Service Now, SNOW, USU, Flexera or any other tools already deployed by your company. With some products, specific screen shots or use of commands are necessary to achieve results. We also rely on published license documentation from IBM and HCL in our work.

Can Canyon Consulting remotely monitor our ILMT and our licensing positions on an on-going basis?

Yes. We manage many customers' ILMT infrastructure and can keep you in license compliance by working with you remotely through fixed management contracts.

Can you help with renewals and pursue licensing cost savings?

Yes, one of the benefits of knowing one’s licensing position is the ability to save costs for unused or underutilized licenses, or to realize savings from activities such as changing metrics based on current and predicted deployment. This can be a specific scope of work or is often a natural by-product of a pre-audit licensing review or health-check.
